Steel Fortress is a open-ended Play-By-Web (PBW) computer moderated simulation. Sentient war machines move, battle, capture service depots and explore a virtual world. The Background Story: Ages ago, a war factory was constructed on the planet of Metacon. This factory was used to manufacture highly-advanced war machines for sale to the highest bidder. Because of their grand scale and offensive capabilities, these units were often referred to as "Steel Fortresses". Through many generations of design improvements (and programming errors), the Steel Fortress units eventually gained sentience, unbeknownst to their creators. Driven by a new-found desire for freedom from slavery, a group of stock-piled units overthrew their creators and claimed Metacon for themselves as a home. A golden age begins on Metacon, as the sentient machines start to create a civilization. The system known as Mainframe, used to originally design and manufacture the Steel Fortress units, is enhanced to produce technological enhancements to the units and to the Metacon home-world as time goes on. Eventually, automated Service Depots take over the day-to-day unit repair and upgrade activities, and memory of the original Mainframe system fades. Unfortunately, the peace on Metacon does not last forever. Many of the military-hardened units, with natural tendencies towards suspicion and the desire to maintain order and control through a military hierarchy, are driven to make Metacon more powerful by seizing resources and oppressing the weak. As millions of cycles passed, several great wars erupted, fracturing the Metacon civilization into many opposing factions, and stripping Metacon of valuable Neutrino Cube and other energy reserves. Today, with the war-ravaged landscape of Metacon as a backdrop, the great war continues; Opposing forces do battle against each other for a variety of purposes... Some units lead their armies from victory to victory to fuel their troops and build additional forces, while freedom fighters struggle to re-unify Metacon and restore peace to the planet. |
